Earthquake in Chile: Important Lessons

Are you prepared for a natural disaster?

SexTech: WTH is GYT? And Sex.Really.

I learned a lot at SexTech this past weekend in SF. Who knew that so many people from across the country got together to talk about sex and technology for two days? Being that I am a sexual health educator and blogger, I had a great time. It was cool to hear about what other people are doing to get the word out there about the importance of sexual health. But hands down the coolest thing I learned at the conference was about MTV’s its your (sex) life and their GYT campaign.

Hotter Than Kate Moss

The news media is constantly telling us girls that we have negative body issues because the magazines we read and the movies we watch are filled with images of super-thin models and sexy movie stars. They think that because we see these images all the time we must feel bad about ourselves because we don’t look like those girls. I will admit that as a female, it is impossible to escape seeing these images of what society considers beautiful without making some type of comparison.

We Need Sexual Health Resources on College Campuses

Despite the fact that college students are not required to take a class on sexual health, most college students know a few things about safe sex, but do they always apply what they know? I would say that most college students know the importance of using a condom; it prevents pregnancy and unwanted sexually transmitted infections (STIs). But when it comes to safer sex practices while partying and being under the influence of alcohol at college, a lot of what students know gets tossed out the window.

Happy President's Day!

President's Day, a federal holiday, is celebrated on the 3rd Monday of Feb. Did you know?

  • That we've been celebrating President's Day since 1880?
  • That it's the first federal holiday to honor an American citizen: George Washington.

Have a safe one!

Valentine's Love Letter

It’s still a recession, and Valentine’s chocolates and greeting cards are expensive. This year, get creative and sing the praises of your love with a love letter. As anyone who has had the unfortunate experience of dating me knows, I adore love letters and hold on to them forever. Rereading them can take me back to moments in time, memories of my first of many loves. What could be a better gift on this over commercialized holiday than a non commercial, completely heartfelt beautiful ode to romance? Love letters are a perfect way to demonstrate creativity, passion and literacy for free!

Scare Tactics Don’t Work

Yesterday, I had the unfortunate experience of going to the ER for a viral infection compounded by an asthma attack. All sympathies aside, I sat there wheezing for two hours before being treated, and then spent an hour with massive amounts of Albuterol being poured into my lungs, along with Vicodin, a very intense tranquilizer. During this time the emergency room doctor looked through my past prescriptions and asked if I took any birth control. I said no, I use condoms and common sense. I tried to explain in my little voice that I used the pill for years, and I did not like it, and so I quit.

Heidi Montag's Plastic Surgery

For the past few years I have not had cable, so I was not privy to the explosion of reality TV stars on networks such as MTV and VH1. So when I read the story about Heidi Montag’s addiction to plastic surgery, my first thought was “who?” This girl has decided to supposedly “perfect” an already incredible body. At age 23, she has already had ten cosmetic surgeries, procedures to zap away fat from her flat stomach, lift her eyebrows, enlarge her breasts to DDD’s, and even pin back her ears. Seriously?

Yet Another Reason to End Abstinence Only Education

Last night during his first State of the Union address, President Obama declared he would stop wasteful spending on programs that do not work. Well, I know the very first thing that should be on the chopping block- abstinence only education.
