There are many uncomfortable topics to discuss when it comes to your sex life, but masturbation could very well be the most awkward topic. Boys may joke around about it and girls may mention it here and there, but let’s face it – the topic of masturbation still remains taboo. Whether or not you talk about masturbation with your friends or family, there’s no need to feel ashamed of doing something that is completely normal. Check out some of the pros and cons of self-pleasure, and decide for yourself if it’s right for you.
Pros
- Masturbating releases endorphins, which can improve your mood. Just as exercising, laughing with friends, and eating chocolate all create feelings of happiness, self-pleasure has proven to produce similar effects. This boost in your overall mood can reduce stress, boost metabolism, and help relieve insomnia.
- Self-pleasure allows you to become more comfortable with your sexuality. If you educate yourself about this topic, you will realize that it’s a normal part of our sex lives. While many young adults engage in self-pleasure, very few like to talk about it. Therefore, if you can talk about masturbation comfortably, your relationship with your body will grow and mature.
Cons
Wait for it...there really AREN'T any cons when it comes to masturbation. Unless you are avoiding other situations or relationships to spend an obsessive amount of time masturbating, there is really no downside. Masturbation is completely safe and unlike sex with another person, there is no risk of contracting an STD or having an unintended pregnancy.
Like all decisions regarding your sex life, choosing to engage in self-pleasure is your own personal choice. Self-pleasure is a healthy habit with many benefits, and you should not feel guilty if you decide to do it, just as you should not feel abnormal if you decide not to do it. Either way, it’s in your best interest to get educated about this topic.
