Let’s talk about internal condoms. Many of us have heard of them, but haven’t given a lot of thought to using them. Why not? Here are some common pros and cons to the internal condom, so you can decide for yourself if you want to give it a shot.
Pros:
- The internal condom warms up to the body’s temperature, which can feel really great during sex.
- Because it is worn in the vagina, the wearer has a lot more control about using protection.
- You can insert the internal condom up to 8 hours before sex, so you don’t need to stop things in the heat of the moment to get up and grab a condom.
- The internal condom is non-latex, so it’s a great alternative if you are allergic to latex!
- The internal condom is loose, so it doesn’t matter what size the penis is. So if a partner with a penis has a hard time finding smaller or larger external condoms, the internal condom can be a great alternative because it works for all sizes! This also means that since it isn’t constricting on the penis, it might feel better for the partner with a penis.
Cons:
- The old polyurethane version of the internal condom used to have a reputation for being noisy (think having sex with a garbage bag sound). However, the new version of the internal condom is made out of nitrile, which does not make the same crinkly sound.
- Internal condoms aren’t as cheap as traditional external condoms. However, when you think about it, it’s still cheaper than medication for STDs or taking care of a baby.
- Because you need to insert the internal condom, you need to be comfortable with your body and with touching your vagina.
