Emergency contraception, also called "EC" or "Plan B," can be used up to 5 days after unprotected sex to help prevent pregnancy, but the sooner it is taken, the more effective it is.
Having emergency contraception on hand in case you have a birth control or condom mishap can make an "emergency" situation a whole lot less stressful. We’re not saying you should plan to have unprotected sex and just take EC afterwards, but mistakes happen, and you don’t want to be caught unprepared.
Luckily emergency contraception is available over the counter at your local pharmacy if you are 17 or older. You can also get EC from your healthcare provider. Find a clinic near you!
