Condoms and birth control are great ways to protect yourself from unwanted pregnancy if used correctly, but sometimes things happen! Thankfully, there is a solution if your chosen method of birth control has failed - emergency contraception (EC).
- EC is highly effective in preventing pregnancy if taken 72 hours after sex- the sooner you take it, the better!
- Check with your local clinic to see if they have free/low cost Emergency Contraception.
- If you are 17 or older, you can get emergency contraception at your local pharmacy without any prescription. If you feel uncomfortable going alone, bring a friend or group for support. They may be helpful when you take the pill as it can sometimes cause mild dizziness or nausea.
- Get your facts straight! Know what EC does - for example it CAN prevent pregnancy but DOES NOT cause an abortion.
- If you can afford it, get extra emergency contraception. Whether it is you or a friend who will eventually need it, nothing reduces the stress of a potential pregnancy like being prepared!
If you are under 17 or don’t know who to talk to about getting Emergency contraception, visit your local clinic for help.
