Now that pride month is well under way, it’s time to enjoy the festivities! From parades to parties, events to e-vites, Pride takes on many forms. As you celebrate, here are 3 gentle reminders for your friends and family to help everybody get in the Pride spirit!
- Pride is for everyone!
Although Pride is a celebration of the LGBTQ+ community, there is no criteria to be met to celebrate Pride. There is no need to come out, or even identify as queer at all. Pride is just as much a space for allies to show support and celebrate the people around them. This month is all about inclusivity and acceptance! Everyone is invited!
- There is no right or wrong way to celebrate Pride
Just as there is no criteria to be included in Pride, there are also no requirements for what is a celebration! That also means you shouldn’t judge anyone, regardless of how they show their appreciation. Some people like to stay in, some like to celebrate with others! Some people prefer to celebrate on their own, while others enjoy the glitz and glam of a parade. Pride is a judgment-free zone, so just keep an open mind this month and enjoy the vibes!
Prefer to stay in? You can find live streams of pride events online, like last year’s WeHo Pride Parade. If you want to join the fun in person, here’s a list of pride events this year which you can filter by country.
- Pride is historic
One of the most important aspects of Pride is its historical significance for the LGBTQ+ community. Pride began to commemorate the Stonewall riots and other police protests against homophobia. At its root, Pride remains a display of activism and resistance against forces of oppression. In the midst of the party, always remember the history and people that came before.
