June: LGBTQ Awareness Month!

Last year, President Obama proclaimed June to be National LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer) Month. In addition to doing many things for the LGBTQ community within the past year, President Obama was the first president to add "transgender" to the proclamation and to call it "Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month."

The month is dedicated to honoring all of the courageous individuals who have fought for LGBTQ rights around the country.  It is a time to for everyone to rededicate themselves to the fight for equal rights for all, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. More importantly, it is a time for teens like you and I to acknowledge the importance of creating a safe space for everyone.

At the end of this year's speech acknowledging the heroes of the LGBTQ community, President Obama sums up his proclamation very well:  “I call upon the people of the United States to eliminate prejudice everywhere it exists, and to celebrate the great diversity of the American people.”
