CA Clinics: What You Didn't Know

Hey teens! Over here at TeenSource we’re always talking about clinic this and clinic that. Do you actually know what goes on at clinics or what exactly you can do/get done at a clinic?

If you are like me and are always super anxious when going to a doctor’s office, don’t be! The clinics we have listed are all great places to go whether you want to ask questions, get tested, get some referrals, or just learn about your health! They love when they get visitors, especially when they are teens that are being pro-active about their health. If you want to visit, just call a clinic near you, tell them what you want, and make an appointment.

Did you know that clinics off a lot more than Sex-Ed and STD/HIV testing, including:

  • Vaccines: Most clinics will have STD prevention products including vaccines (like Gardasil or the Hepatitis B vaccine) as well as general vaccines (like seasonal flu shots). Some vaccines, HPV vaccine for example, are given in a series over several months, so you have to plan to go to the clinic more than once.
  • Men’s Health Care Services: For all you guys out there, did you know that clinics offer services beyond STD testing? They provide education and exams on health problems including erectile dysfunction, jock itch, premature ejaculation, urinary tract infections, etc.    They also have many different checkup and counseling services. The best thing to do if you want more info, is to ask them to refer you to another pro!
  • Women’s Health Care Services: As a girl you can get breast exams, cervical cancer screenings, pap smear tests, sexual response education, infertility testing/education, treatments for vaginal infections, help with irregular periods or no periods, etc. Calling in before you stop by is especially important for these services because they might need you to follow specific instructions before coming in. Just contact that clinic and ask them what you need to do.
  • Sexual and Reproductive Health Services: Besides the general health care services, all clinics offer sexual health services including birth control/emergency contraception, HIV/STD testing, and pregnancy testing services.

$$: If you are worried about money and how you will pay for the services, don’t be. Tell them your situation, and you might qualify for a state-funded program and/or a reduced fee.

If going alone is intimidating, grab a friend a long for the ride. They might learn a few new things, and you will have someone by your side. Most importantly, DON’T BE SCARED TO ASK QUESTIONS. They have the answers, but they can’t help you unless you tell them what you need and what you are looking for.
