2012: Bringing Sexy-Smart Back!

Hey all you teens out there! There are only a few days left till 2011 is over and we can finally start a new year. I say 2012 is the year to go out and get sex smart. Make this the year you get your questions answered about HIV/STDs, birth control, condoms, LGBTQ, or even the truth about weird sex stories.

Most importantly, how about making 2012 the year you start to feel comfortable talking about sex? Step up in your group of friends, in your sex-ed class, or to someone you care deeply about and tell them that safer is sexier.  Knowledge is power and believe it or not, nerds are in.

So for those of you that are down to channel your inner nerd and bring sexy-smart back, consider these simple New Year’s resolutions:

1. Get Tested! If you’re having any kind of sex, getting tested for STDs should definitely be on your list of to-dos. Since the most common symptom of STDs is having no symptoms at all, the only way to know for sure is to get tested.  Not only is getting tested easy, but it's confidential and might even be free. All you have to do is find a clinic near you and let them know you want to be screened for STDs. Maybe even grab a few friends along for the ride?

2. Find your go-to method of birth control. Ladies did you know that there are over 15 different types of bc? If you’re like me and know you will forget taking the pill at the same time every day, take a look at long-acting methods like IUDs, the implant, or the estrogen shot. Use the coming month to choose a bc method to stick with and get it out of the way for the rest of the year. Just find a local clinic and have them recommend an ideal bc method for you!

3. Make protection a priority! Guys, we all know you’ve heard the shpeal before, but have you actually done anything about it?? Condoms are the ONLY way to protect against HIV/STDs and they’re super easy to get your hands on so get to it.  You can find them at virtually every clinic and gas station out there!  You can also show your special someone your spontaneous side by checking out some fun, sexy gadgets for safe sex. Condoms come in many colors, sizes, scents and there are even different flavored lubricants! Safe sex does not have to be boring. Get creative and have fun.

4. Make a plan.  If you are sexually active, take the initiative to lay out a plan with your partner to visit your local health clinic throughout the year. Talk about birth control, routine STD testing, and a list of action steps should either of you get positive results.  Talking about STD testing can be awkward and intimidating, but it can also bring both of you closer.

5. Debunk all those sex myths! There are a lot of sex myths out there like the myth that using 2 condoms instead of 1 provides extra protection. Set yourself straight this year by researching all the sex myths you’ve heard and finding out what’s fact or fiction. All you need is the internet.  With a little time, Dr.Google can help you out!  In fact, you can find a bunch of information and useful links right here on our site.

6. Follow us on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, or by text with the Hookup. No one knows everything about sex and there is nothing wrong with finding out more.
