Talking to Your Parents About Sex

Many teens have found that it can be a big help to talk to their parents about sex and health. Because your parents know you so well, they can give you advice that is suited to you and answer your questions in a really personal way.

It may not be easy to start the conversation. Here’s a few ideas you can use to make it easier.

How to get started.

It helps to talk about sex when your parents can give you their full attention. Between your busy life and theirs, you may even need to make an appointment! Try to find an evening when you can just spend time with them with nothing else going on. You may want to think about whether it would be easier to talk to your mom or your dad.

To get started, bring up the topic in a way that shows you value what your parents have to say. You could say, “I’d like to get your take on this.” Or “This may seem weird to talk about, but I wanted to ask you about….” It may help to bring up a situation you’ve wanted to ask about when you are watching TV. Or maybe in the context of a hypothetical situation or something that’s going on with a friend.

Ask your parents questions.

One question you could ask is “What do you think I should know about sex?” As they answer you, let them know you are listening. Repeat in your own words the important parts of what they’ve said, to make sure you’ve understood.

Keeping the conversation going.

You and your folks may not agree on everything. You may have differing values and priorities, but that’s why it’s good to get their perspective. It’s important to hear them out. They may have a good point that will help you sort things out. The important thing is to keep the lines of communication open.

You need answers.

It may be that your parents may not be able to talk about sex with you, for one reason or another. You may need to look for advice and information from another adult you can trust.

  • Try talking to your aunt or uncle, your grandparents, or another relative.
  • You might try one of your friends' parents, or your counselor at school.
  • You can find a family planning clinic near you and talk to the people there.

The important thing is to get the information and support you need.
