Amy Poehler (Baby Mama, Saturday Night Live) launched her web series, "Smart Girls," Nov 17, 2008, a show that "celebrates extraordinary individuals who are changing the world by being themselves." She, Meredith Walker, and Amy Miles have teamed up with ON networks to celebrate young girls in short clips. The clips showcases young girls being interviewed by Amy Poehler.

Study Finds that Spending Time Online is Good for Teens!

Next time someone tells you that hanging out online is a waste of time, you can reference this study, which states, "spending time online is essential for young people to pick up the social and technical skills they need to be competent citizens in the digital age". The study interviewed teens, observed them interact online at websites such as Myspace, Facebook, Youtube, etc. and found that young people develop important social skills online in ways adults often do not get.

Watch the Tyra Banks Show this Friday as Tyra discusses with eight girls survey results from an anonymous teen survey that more than 10,000 teenage girls and young women took part in over the summer on TyraShow.com. Survey questions focused on sexuality, sexually transmitted diseases, teen pregnancy, drinking, drugs, and violence among females. The girls on Friday's show range in age from 14 to 17 and will discuss the survey findings and share their own personal experiences.

kNOwMORE Sexual Coercion

In September, the Family Violence Prevention Fund (FVPF) launched kNOwMORE, a website about domestic violence and sexual violence. Sexual coercion and violence can result in unplanned pregnancy, HIV/AIDS and other STDs, miscarriage, infertility and a range of other serious health issues. Nearly 1 in 5 women age 18 to 24 report having experienced forced sexual intercourse at least once in their lives. The kNOwMORE web site features resources, a blog, and stories from women who have experienced abuse.

Teen Pregnancy PSA on Gossip Girl

Kudos to Gossip Girl for running a teen pregnancy prevention ad on last Monday's (Oct 27) episode. Check out the flyer here. The ad was created by The Candie's Foundation, a website dedicated to keeping teens from getting pregnant unintentionally. Hayden Panettiere, from Heroes, is featured prominently on the homepage. The ad from Gossip Girl also ran in the New York Times.
