You must be the change you wish to see in the world.
Mahatma Gandhi, Indian Political and Spiritual Leader

As a youth, what really inspires you and energizes you to work with teens and young adults?

"I started when I was 15 years old so my initial motivation was the money. After I realized the impact I could have on my community, I soon took pride in the work I was doing. I still have the same feeling about the work, knowing that I can be seen as a role model in the community."
Brandon Walker, Community Health Worker at T.H. E. Clinic
"For me, growing up in a neighborhood where a lot of teens were getting pregnant, I wanted to help out. The other reason that inspired me was my future goal. I want to be in the medical field so I thought this would be a great opportunity."
Tony Vera, Peer Provider at Family Health Centers of San Diego
"My sister. She was a teen mother."
Miguel Trejo, Peer Counselor at Stanislaus County SHADE Teen Clinic

As an adult, what really inspires you and energizes you to work with teens and young adults?

"I realize that unlike a lot of adults, I never forgot what it was like to be a teen. I still feel like a teen and most of my friends say I act like one! Looking back, I wish someone had guided me through the realities of my life. I feel that I am now in a position to help empower teens and help them realize that they have a voice that is strong and deserves to be heard. I believe teens have needs and that they have the right to be who they are right now. I have a tremendous amount of respect for the teens that I work with - they are some of the most amazing people I've ever met."

"There is a huge need to serve teenagers in a nonjudgmental way. I love working with teens. I love knowing that I'm helping them develop decision-making skills for a bright future."
Melissa Mills, Program Manager at Planned Parenthood's Ujima Teen Center LA
"I am inspired by the innate wisdom and creativity that youth demonstrate in their work. I appreciate the ability teens and young adults have to live in the 'now,' rebounding from adversity and approaching new challenges courageously. Their spirit of joy, optimism and authenticity energizes my work. Finally, I am always impressed by the knowledge and commitment to excellence they exhibit in their skills as health care providers. In these trying times, it is comforting to know that many of the young people that I have had the fortune of working with are likely to become the leaders of tomorrow."
Charles Boyd, teensource.org Program Consultant
"There are many reasons why I enjoy working with teens. It is very powerful for me to serve as a mentor for young people and learn from them at the same time. Teenagers experience so much of the world's hardships, including many that some adults may never understand. It fascinates me to see teens working hard, building strength to make it through everything the world has to offer. And, it makes me happy to know that I am part of that process."
