I Do Something

In my most recent post, I wrote about the brutalization of a 15 year old girl at Richmond High, and how angry and frustrated I felt. Despite my own desire for vigilante justice against the rapists, I want to focus on the message the family of survivor gave during a community meeting. The message called for restoring justice by community action to make sure this type of violence does not happen, rather than take bloody revenge against her attackers.

Inspired by such admirable actions, I want to participate, but my question is how do you do that? While searching for the Teensource.org facebook fan page, I stumbled upon another fan page for an organization, www.dosomething.org. This organization encourages youth to participate to help their communities in whatever way they can, on helping out a variety of causes from poverty to STD awareness, disaster relief and humane treatment of animals and beyond. You can make your own profile, rank your special interests and skills, and then receive tips and suggestions on how to make an impact on your chosen cause. It’s also a social site, where you can link up with other like minded folk to work on a project together, or just share a conversation.

I think this is great idea because there are so many issues in the world, it is easy to get so overwhelmed that you think nothing will help anyway, so why even try, and then nothing is solved. This site not only encourages you to see injustice in the world and do something about it, but it also provides resources to make sure you are successful.
